These Donuts are simple and easy and lower on sugar than most.
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tblsp sugar
- 1 tblsp of fast acting yeast
- 1 beaten egg
- 2 – 3 cups of flour
- 1/3 melted or soften butter
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 1 tblsp of vegetable or sunflower oil (don’t use corn oil)
Sugar and Cinnamon to dust after frying
In a good sturdy mixer, pour warm water (at least 110 degrees) and sugar into your mixing bowl, stir till dissolved. Add yeast. Mix with dough hook. Add some flour to get things moving, add the egg and vanilla and soften butter. Then just add your flour a little at a time and let it kneed for about 5 min until sticky. Once its complete, remove the dough from the sides and bottom ( I hold mine) add the oil at the bottom and roll around to cover the dough. Cover with plastic wrap, grocery sack or a wet towel and let the dough rise for about 30 min in the over with the light on. (don’t turn the over on).
I’m using a deep fryer with sunflower oil, enough to cover the basket. Turn your fryer on (you can use a iron skillet, just watch your heat, iron skillets retain heat and can get to hot) to 374 degrees.
Remove the dough from the bowl onto a counter or solid surface and dust with flour as needed to get to workable. Kneed the dough for about 5 min. Cut the dough into small strips, touch the ends and twist as I show in the video. Fry until brown on each side and then drop into cinnamon and sugar until covered.
